1. Individual Mandate
Beginning January 1, 2014, most Americans over age 18 will be required to have public or private health insurance, or pay a financial penalty.
2. Affordability
Tax credits, government subsidies and Medi-Cal will aid in making health insurance affordable.
3. Guaranteed Issue
Beginning January 1,2014, all insurance companies will be required to accept applicants regardless of any pre-existing conditions.
4. Open Enrollment
The initial Open Enrollment window to apply for health insurance under the new Health Care Reform begins in October 2013 for a January 1, 2014 effective date.
5. Essential Health Benefits
Health Care Reform requires that all health plans must meet a minimum level of comprehensive coverage of items and services, known as Essential Health Benefits.
6. No Lifetime Limits
Lifetime limits on health coverage will be prohibited by insurance companies.
7. Preventive Care
All new health plans must cover preventive care and medical screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies. Insurers cannot charge copayments, coinsurance or deductibles for such services.
8. Dependent Coverage
All Health plans that cover dependents are required to cover dependents on a parent’s plan until their 26th birthday, regardless of their student status.
9. Increased Premiums
Effective January 2014, insurance companies will not be able to charge higher premium rates because a person has pre-existing conditions.
10. Menu Labeling
Restaurants with 20 or more locations will be required to display menus with nutritional information for each item sold, such as calories, carbs, etc.
